Fun for your toddler and you, with:

Benefits of pre-school music activities

Most young children respond with pleasure to a strong beat, a catchy tune or an opportunity to experiment with a musical instrument. Classes which provide such experiences are great fun, but they can and should offer more than just enjoyment. This is what Rondo Music Groups do.

By taking part in a range of musical activities (singing, playing instruments, moving, etc), 'tiny tots' can begin to understand concepts such as high and low, loud and quiet, fast and slow - basic elements of music. They can learn to distinguish between tapping, shaking and scraping sounds and recognise the distinctive tone qualities of simple instruments made from different materials such as wood or metal.

It is easy to see how a child's wider learning can benefit directly from certain music class activities. For example, singing songs is going to widen vocabulary; being encouraged to listen attentively for a particular musical sound will improve listening skills in general; playing a simple rhythm on a percussion instrument will be good for co-ordination.

There are also many other, perhaps less obvious, areas of a child's development which can be stimulated through music, such as imagination, memory, concentration, confidence and social interaction.

The music class is not just good for a sing-song and a bit of fun. It could and should be an integral part of a young child's education.

A typical class

A typical Rondo session comprises some 15 items, including:

  • a "greeting" song
  • topical songs (eg focusing on the weather, season or special day)
  • songs which highlight musical elements such as high/low, fast/slow, loud/quiet
  • activities with hand-held classroom percussion instruments (such as tambourines, maracas, jingles) to encourage appreciation of different qualities of sound (such as wood or metal) and different ways of making sounds (tapping, shaking, scraping, etc)
  • listening games, which help develop concentration and awareness of different sounds
  • activities to encourage a feeling for a steady beat
  • circle songs, to encourage "taking turns"
  • a "goodbye" song

Classes are progressive - for example we may learn a new song one week, then add a verse the next.

Parent/carer/childminder remains with their toddler during a class. Incidentally, whilst most children come with their Mums, these classes are also particularly popular with grandparents and fathers. If you are a grandmother, grandfather or father wanting to spend some quality time with your grandchild/child, you will be most welcome.

Average class size this year has been 6.

How to get the most from a class

Catchy songs, musical games, instruments and fun are the basic ingredients of the sessions. However, while some children will throw themselves into every activity from the word "go", others are more selective. Parents/carers who encourage the children with sensitivity and at the same time enter into the activities themselves with enthusiasm, find that their children gain the maximum benefit from the sessions.

For under 5s

These classes are for children from about 18 months old to Reception Class age (please call though if your child is a bit younger but you still think they'll benefit - 15 or 16 month olds may be suitable for example). Led by Mary McNeill, an experienced, well-qualified and enthusiastic Music Teacher

Mary is currently Head of The Latymer Saturday Music Centre
www.tlsmc.co.uk (at The Latymer School www.latymer.co.uk, Edmonton, North London) where she teaches musicianship classes to children from Reception to Year 6. Mary also gives private piano and theory lessons.
